Renovation season at Leyland Golf Club has delivered impressive results following the investment in a V-Strong from GKB Machines.

Installed in February 2026 by Balmers GM, the club’s first in-house scarifier quickly proved its worth surpassing the expectations of Head Greenkeeper John Edge – enabling him and the team to cover significantly more ground, with even better results, than ever previously achieved.

John has been at the 18-hole parkland course for the last two years, joining the club in its celebratory centenary year.

Looking to deliver the consistent playing conditions expected by the 600 members, John immediately reviewed the maintenance and renovation programme, swiftly bringing in a contractor to give the greens a kick-start in the spring of 2024. “I’ve used various makes and models of scarifier previously, but this contractor came in with the GKB V-Strong and it blew me away” comments John.

“Firstly the speed at which it covered the greens was seriously impressive. But it wasn’t just speed, it was the fact that it simultaneously picked up so well. It got the job done efficiently and effectively and left the greens clean and ready for play almost immediately.”

Featuring GKB’s unique CombiRotor and heavy-duty steel blades, the V-Strong makes light work of scarifying golf greens and other sports surfaces – removing lateral growth and organic matter to depths of up to 40mm. After two further visits from the contractor, John was sold on having a V-Strong in his own machinery armoury. “The results spoke for themselves, and the General Manager and Chairman were both on board with us making the investment. We also received fantastic support from Dan Whalley and Andrew Meeks at Balmers who got the team primed and ready for the upcoming renovation window.”

And it’s fair to say, the anticipation was matched by impressive in-field performance! “We renovated all 18 greens at the start of April and, due to the speed of operation with the V-Strong, we actually managed to do all the approaches as well – getting the whole lot scarified in one day. We found we didn’t need to follow the machine with blowers because the pick-up was so good and, within a week, all the renovated areas were back in play. We knew the machine was good, but it truly did exceed our expectations.”

John continues, “Having our own machine will give us the flexibility to conduct scarification more frequently, and in the optimum windows for recovery – no longer limited by cost or contractor availability. We can spend a bit of time educating the team on the reasons why we scarify and transfer those benefits to other areas, such as the approaches, which we’ve previously not had the resources to scarify.”

“There’s no doubt in our minds that, with this machine, we’ll quickly reap the benefits in terms of both plant health and player satisfaction.”

Wiedenmann UK’s Super 1300 range has been developed to provide a compact, manoeuvrable solution for sports grounds, golf courses, parks, estates and contractors working in areas where larger collection machines may be impractical.

The range comprises two models: the Super 1300 S is a dedicated sweeper, using twin rotary brushes to collect grass clippings, leaves and surface debris into a 1,600-litre hopper; and alongside it, sits the Super 1300 M, with the ‘M’ standing for Multihead.

Rather than relying solely on brushes, the Super 1300 M features a versatile head unit capable of accepting either flail or scarifying blades. This allows operators to cut and collect, or scarify and collect, in a single pass, reducing the number of operations required and helping maximise productivity during busy maintenance periods.

Both models are designed for use with compact tractors, making them particularly suited to sites with restricted access, narrow gateways or areas where manoeuvrability is important. With a working width of 1.3m, they still offer a generous collection capacity.

A high-tip system is fitted as standard, allowing material to be discharged directly into trailers or skips up to 1.7m high. Operators can also specify an optional fill indicator which alerts them when the hopper reaches 90% capacity.

Since Robert Cheape joined The Glasgow Academy in 1985, the school and accompanying sports grounds have expanded significantly.

His tenure as Head Groundsman has been underpinned by a long-standing partnership with dealers Hamilton Ross Group, and much of the success he has attributed to the reliability and versatility delivered by Kubota tractors in use at the grounds for over 30 years.

Founded in 1845, The Glasgow Academy is the oldest continuously fully independent school in Glasgow, now providing a private coeducational day school for 1700 pupils.

The school is renowned for its sporting prowess – with rugby and hockey played by both the students and Glasgow Accies Sports club in the winter months, then switching to primarily cricket, tennis and athletics during the summer.

Working alongside Robert on the maintenance of the natural turf and artificial surfaces is a busy team of six, with three of the staff having over 120 years of service between them.

“With sport played daily, we rely heavily on having the right, reliable equipment to produce pitches that can withstand the pressure of constant wear” Robert says. For more than three decades, powering that maintenance operation has been Kubota. “In the shed we have a Kubota B1550 from the early 1990’s which still runs and is used for lighter jobs around the sites, a B2650 and, more recently, we added an L2622 to the fleet.”

“While we can see the improvements and things like the controls and operator-friendliness has moved on they’re still, fundamentally, well-built, comfortable, reliable workhorses. For that reason, I’ll never use anything else” he adds.

The L2622 delivered in August 2025 brings increased power and productivity, featuring a 61hp stage-V diesel engine and the highest rear lift capacity in its class. “With time of the essence, we found we were relying on larger, more power-hungry implements and the L2622 has proven the perfect partner for implements such as our Verti-Drain – which we’re increasingly relying on with the more regular periods of prolonged and heavy rainfall.”

“We also run a Kubota RTV-X1110 which is another reliable runaround, towing smaller equipment and getting people and tools around the sites quickly and safely.”

Reliability for Robert extends beyond the machines themselves, with Kubota he also has the added peace of mind of first-class dealer support from the team at Hamilton Ross Group.

“I’ve dealt with Paul Denholm since 1990 and the school’s relationship with Hamilton’s began even before that,” he added. “We just know that if we need anything, from a simple advice call or a service visit, that they’ll be there to look after us. That sort of service goes a long way.”

Stratford Oaks Golf Club committed to another five years of course excellence and financial sustainability with a significant reinvestment in Toro machinery, facilitated through the hugely popular ‘buy now, pay later’ finance agreement with Reesink Turfcare.

With the finance offer secured in December, the latest investment sees the club upgrade and expand its machinery fleet, enabling the team to enhance operational efficiency while simultaneously progressing key course improvement projects.

“We didn’t want to have to put project work on hold while we upgraded the fleet,” says Course Manager James Cleaver. “The option of the ‘buy now, pay later’ deal meant we didn’t have to. We could secure the essential maintenance equipment we needed without compromising on investments elsewhere.”

Following routine due diligence, the Board of Directors concluded that this approach represented the most effective use of the club’s resources. “We invest carefully and it’s vital we get it right first time,” says James.

A thorough evaluation of pricing versus total cost of ownership, parts availability, and long-term reliability across multiple brands confirmed that in practice and on paper Toro and Reesink would give us the financial predictability and continuity in course maintenance standards we were looking for.

The five-year payment plan aligned strategically with the club’s machinery replacement cycle and the process itself was described as seamless by James, with Reesink’s team managing the bulk of the administration. “Josh Nash and the team at Reesink handled everything from start to finish. All we needed to do was review and sign off — it was incredibly straightforward.”

The investment comes at a pivotal time for the club, which is currently undertaking a series of major improvement projects. It is in phase two of a four-phase bunker refurbishment programme and replacing all its tees sprinklers. Construction is underway on a new maintenance facility, and it is developing its academy and introducing a new driving range and short game facilities. With these improvements intended to increase value for members while maintaining cost efficiency, it was important they could continue — and with Reesink’s ‘buy now, pay later’ deal they could.

Jon Cole, Divisional Business Manager at Reesink Turfcare, says: “We understand clubs need to balance investment with day-to-day operational demands. The goal of our flexible finance options is to make it as easy as possible to access the right machinery at the right time, without delaying important projects or compromising on quality.”

The deal includes two Toro Greensmaster 3420 mowers, three Greensmaster 1021 and two Greensmaster 1026 walking mowers, Workman utility vehicles, a Groundsmaster 4500 mower and two Reelmaster 3575-D which have been particularly useful for the site as it can get quite wet, says James. “We don’t risk any tearing or scuffing with this mower because they’re so lightweight.”

Looking ahead, Stratford Oaks is closely monitoring advancements in robotic mowing technology. “We’re very interested in how robotics are being adopted across UK golf clubs,” James added. “We expect Toro robotic mowers to play a role in our next machinery investment cycle, particularly on the new driving range.”

Jon concludes: “What stood out with the 2025 ‘buy now, pay later’ offer was just how popular it was. Now more than ever, we can see how much clubs value being able to spread the cost over a structured term, focusing on long-term value, improving efficiency, and planning with confidence — while we handle the process.”

For contractors working in demanding environments and, often, to tight schedules, machinery needs to be robust and reliable to deliver day-in, day-out.

That’s why many, like Lincolnshire’s Premier Turfing Ltd, rely on GKB Machines.

Owner Ian Mawer has recently added to his fleet with the purchase of an SPM400 topdresser, joining a GKB Sandfiller, Combinator and DrainMaster already delivering dependability for a demanding workload.

Founded over 15 years ago, Premier Turfing Ltd has established a reputation as a leading sports turf contractor – delivering construction, renovation and maintenance services on winter sports pitches, cricket outfields, racecourses and golf courses throughout the UK and Europe.

Supporting a 16-strong team that works across Premier Turfing Ltd and the recently launched sister company, Premier Golf Ltd (formerly John Greasley Golf), owns & operates a vast and varied fleet of equipment.

“The GKB build quality is something that really stands out to us as contractors, and that reliability and efficiency is something we’ve become accustomed to” explains Ian. “When we were looking for a high productivity and large capacity dresser for big projects and those in our peak busy period, I knew straight away where to look.”

Ian stopped by the GKB Machines stand at SALTEX 2025, where he discussed the options available with longstanding contact Tom Shinkins. “There’s no nonsense with Tom, he knew exactly what we were after and his recommendation of the SPM400 has, so far, ticked every box.”

At 4m3 (level hopper load), the SPM400 offers not only GKB’s largest hopper capacities, but one of the largest available in the market. Part of the Sandspreader range, the SPM features an additional material handler for the convenient filling of bunkers and drainage machine hoppers. “For a relatively small additional investment, we’ve infinitely increased the versatility of this machine. Not only will it be used to spread sand on end of season football or rugby renovations, we’ll also use it for drainage projects and in conjunction with the GKB DrainMaster where we can now quickly and easily top up the hopper.”

In a few short weeks since its delivery, the SPM has made a solid first impression. “The team said it was great – super easy to set up, with a really good spread pattern. They loved it!” With a busy renovation season just around the corner, Ian firmly believes the machine is set to become a key weapon in their armoury. “We’re looking forward to exploring the full potential of it and reaping the rewards of its larger size helping us to get jobs done both more effectively and more efficiently.”

Trade media spanning sports turf, landscaping and amenity recently spent two days at the Kubota UK facility in Thame, Oxfordshire, to learn more about the exciting expansions of two popular mower ranges.

Together with getting ‘hands-on’ with the latest additions in both the FC and zero-turn portfolios, press were updated on the ongoing investment and growth of the product offering and wider brand across the globe.

The group were welcomed by Henry Bredin, division manager, who discussed Kubota’s new global leadership changes – including a new CEO, President of Europe, and President of the Tractor Business Unit (TBU), who have all been tasked with steering the company to find solutions to the environmental challenges posed by the modern world.

Among these solutions, Henry focused on the exciting developments in the autonomous arena, with Kubota working on auto-steer systems which they hope will go some way to address issues associated with labour shortages and field productivity.

Press were then treated to a tour of Kubota’s UK headquarters. With questions regarding global supply chains, export markets and power sources answered, the day concluded with a ‘battery challenge’ – demonstrating the simplicity and speed of switching between batteries in the field.

Matt Wilson, product manager for groundcare, took charge for day two, focussing on the rationale behind the expansion of Kubota’s mower range which now spans across three power sources: diesel, petrol and electric. He cited changes in operator requirements as the main driver for the new FC and zero-turn models, explaining how the bigger range now offers greater choice, confidence and continuity for customers across all key sectors.

New products include the FC4-441, designed to deliver versatile cut and collect performance on large areas such as parks and sports facilities. A true multi-tasker, the FC4-441 is fully customisable with different attachments and a choice of rotary or flail mower deck, meaning it’s as comfortable leaving a fine cut quality throughout the growing season as it is collecting leaves or shovelling snow.

The FC4-441 formed part of a comprehensive line-up of machines available for the media to ‘test drive’, giving everyone the ability to discover first-hand the comfort, control and outstanding manoeuvrability offered across the Kubota range. Driving skills were put to the test on a zero-turn obstacle course, bringing proceedings to a close with some friendly but ever-competitive rivalry!

Commenting on the event, Matt Wilson extended a big thank you to all of those who attended. “It was a pleasure to present the range evolution in line with the market needs and share exciting changes which ensures that Kubota remain at the forefront of delivering the right solutions for today’s turf professionals.”

The CS Pro with a 3m working width has further elevated the reputation of specialist landscape contractor RA Country Services, which serves prestigious estates and sports facilities across South East England.

Based in West Sussex, RA Country Services has provided high-end grounds care for more than twenty years. Thanks to its reputation for delivering a consistently high-class finish, the company is regularly engaged by elite clients seeking the very best in turf and landscape maintenance.

“We have an extensive customer base requiring the upkeep of high-quality football, rugby and cricket pitches,” explained owner Richard Amer. “Grassland management is a big part of our work, along with equine paddock maintenance. We always go the extra mile so our clients can be proud of their grounds.”

Three years ago, Richard identified a need to upgrade machinery. His existing finishing mower failed to deliver the required standard and, with a 1.8m cutting width, limited daily output as demand increased.

Following advice from dealer Farol Ltd, RA Country Services invested in a Major MJ65‑300 CS Pro. The fully mounted rotary mower is designed for compact tractors, handling dense vegetation and rough grass while still producing an exceptional finish on fine turf.

Its performance comes from a unique blade system: four rotors and 16 overlapping blades operating beneath three pivoting decks, ensuring a flawless cut across the full width. Front and rear rollers level the surface, reduce scalping and help mulch clippings evenly.

“The finish is a league above our previous mower,” said Richard. “It’s easily the best I’ve seen.”

With a 3m cutting width that folds to 2m for transport, the CS Pro pairs comfortably with the company’s 50hp John Deere 3046R tractor, offering ease of transport and greatly improved productivity.

Built from Strenx 700 high-strength steel with a fully galvanised, belt free design, the CS Pro is durable, low maintenance and built to last. “It’s ideal for professional turf contractors,” Richard concluded, “and makes a real difference where finish and output matter.”

The Maidenhead Golf Club has embarked on the next era of its 130 years by relocating to Ascot.

Supporting plans to update and improve the new course, it invested heavily in a Toro machinery five-year rolling lease programme and committed to the future by signing a Toro Total Solutions Agreement with distributor Reesink UK to include a new irrigation system.

With 36 extra acres and a more demanding layout, the club’s new home has the potential for not only a significantly enhanced golfing experience but realistic ambitions to make a top 100 golf club in the UK.

But first there’s some work to do and that is the responsibility of Course Manager Martin Dearlove.

“The new course layout is fantastic but there is work needed to bring it back up to standard and reinstate its original features,” he says. “That process is well underway. We’ve invested £1 million in fairway drainage, there’s a significant bunker renovation planned, we have a brand new fleet of turfcare equipment from Toro, and installation for a new Toro irrigation system planned to start this summer.

Working with Paul Bell from Reesink Southeast branch, the club has received three Greensmaster Triflex 3420 mowers, a Reelmaster 5610 and Reelmaster 3100, a MultiPro 5800 sprayer, the MDX and HDX Workman utility vehicles, a ProPass 200 topdresser, and for the very first time a ProCore 648s.

All but the ProCore 648s are replacement mowers for a previously ageing fleet, says Martin, and while it is the first time the club has owned a ProCore aerator, it is not the first time Martin has used one.

“I love that machine; we’ve always used it but up until now we’ve hired one when it was time to aerate. However, with the new course clay based and susceptible to waterlogging, we knew we’d need to aerate more often to ensure standards are maintained throughout the year.”

With 16 years of experience working at top British golf clubs and time spent experiencing life on the course in Australia, Martin knew the Toro brand well and when it came time to decide on who to commit to for a lease deal it was “the first choice”. At the same time, he knew he needed to invest in the team to help with the increased workload and he’s expanded the team from eight to 11.

“The next 5 to 10 years will be crucial in setting the foundations for taking the course forward. There’s a lot of work to do but we have the right machinery and manpower to support it.”

The next priority is the irrigation system. The inherited system is 35 years old and doesn’t have the precision, reach or capabilities Martin requires for the site: “The system in place is causing us issues, we need the reliability of a modern irrigation solution. We’ve opted for Toro Lynx Central Control with Infinity sprinklers for the greens, tees, approaches and all the fairways with work starting July.”

With a complete Toro package plus support from Reesink, The Maidenhead Golf Club can begin the next era knowing technology, quality and precision are on its side.

An investment in an ISEKI TG 6507 tractor is helping Elgin Golf Club take a more flexible and efficient approach to course maintenance.

Supplied by Fairways GM Ltd, the tractor has enabled the greenkeeping team to work confidently across the site while minimising surface impact and enhancing day-to-day operations.

Founded in 1906, Elgin Golf Club is widely regarded as one of the finest inland courses in the north of Scotland. Set in Moray and Speyside, the 6,496-yard course offers a fair but demanding test, with presentation standards central to its reputation. Ongoing improvements, including bunker renovations and layout refinements, reflect the evolving demands of the game and place greater emphasis on precision maintenance.

Head Greenkeeper Calum Forsyth joined the club two years ago with a clear objective to build on its strong foundations and continue progressing standards. Having developed his experience in the Lake District, Nairn and Australia, he brought a clear focus on bringing operations up to date and ensuring the right machinery was in place.

“We’ve been going through some changes with bunkers and layouts,” Calum explains. “Modern technology has changed the game, and we want to make sure we keep up to date with that.”

A key part of that process was addressing the limitations of the club’s previous tractor, which proved too large for the demands of the course.

“We did have a tractor here before which was too big,” he says. “It meant we were limited to certain areas. That was our main concern.

“The TG 6507 can be used across all surfaces. With its size and power, we can use just about any implement on the back and go across the course without causing damage, or at least keeping that to a minimum depending on conditions.”

The introduction of the TG 6507 has allowed the team to take a more versatile approach, alongside continued investment in new spiking and seeding equipment.

In day-to-day use, the TG 6507’s operator-focused design has improved efficiency, particularly during operations such as aerating. A key feature is ISEKI’s IQ Gearbox, which allows operators to adjust speed on the move while maintaining consistent engine performance.

“You can change speed as you’re going but keep everything else consistent,” Calum says. “Being able to drop gears while still moving forward and keeping the revs consistent is really useful, especially when you’re trying to maintain the quality of the work.

“That IQ Gearbox makes a big difference day to day because you’re not constantly stopping or adjusting everything. It just keeps the job flowing.

“As you lift, the PTO switches off automatically, so you’re not having to juggle controls. It’s such an easy process. And with the cab, we can go out in the wet without worrying about conditions. It makes it a pleasure to use.”

For the team at Elgin, the TG 6507 represents more than a replacement machine. It has introduced a level of flexibility that supports both current maintenance demands and the club’s ongoing development.

“The golf course has been in a very good place,” Calum says. “We just want to take it to that next step.”
