Major Swift mower delivers for showground

A six-metre trailed Major Swift Roller Mower helps maintain the high-quality presentation required for one of the South West’s busiest event venues.

Located near Exeter, Westpoint is the region’s largest showground and hosts a wide range of exhibitions, events and agricultural shows throughout the year. The site spans 160 acres, with around 150 acres of grassland used for outdoor activities and car parking. The popular Devon County Show alone attracts more than 90,000 visitors annually.

Showground manager Ray Bater has overseen maintenance of the site for the past ten years. Working with a small team of three, keeping the grounds in top condition can be demanding, especially during busy event periods.

“We are often non-stop when it comes to ground care and maintenance,” Ray explains. “Even with four of us, it can be challenging to prepare everything in time for the next event.”

Previously, the team relied on an 8-foot topper to cut the large grass areas, a process that was slow and labour-intensive. When grass growth increased during favourable weather, additional mowing was required, often forcing the team to hire contractors.

To improve efficiency, their local dealer, Devon Garden Machinery, recommended the MJ71-600T Major Swift Roller Mower. After a demonstration, the team quickly realised the benefits.

The six-metre trailed mower, with folding wings for easy transport and storage, dramatically improved productivity. “It was fast, efficient and easy to drive,” says Ray. “Our 100-hp Massey Ferguson tractor handles it very well and it leaves a very professional finish.”

With the new mower, the team can now cut the entire 150 acres in two days or less, reducing mowing time by more than half and lowering operating costs. Featuring a durable gearbox-driven system and full-length rollers that follow ground contours, the mower delivers a consistent striped finish across uneven terrain.

“You can tell it’s built to last,” Ray adds. “It’s reliable, easy to maintain and produces a finish we’re proud to show visitors.”
