When the club’s experienced groundsman sadly passed away, the club’s volunteers suddenly had to take on a specialist job with little or no prior experience.

Volunteers, including club president Neil McNaughton, had to learn how to measure pitches, create right angles, maintain consistent lines and prepare surfaces for a busy fixture schedule.

With eight pitches to look after and limited time available, relying on manual marking was no longer practical. The winter football calendar added another problem: when pitches were unused for weeks, the club still had to re-mark lines simply to avoid losing the layouts, wasting both paint and volunteer hours.

After seeing Turf Tank through an online advert, McNaughton arranged a demonstration. Within 18 months, the robotic line marking system had become central to the club’s grounds operation. Instead of a volunteer walking every line manually, Turf Tank can be set up in around five minutes and then left to mark the pitch while volunteers get on with other jobs. Jordan joined the club, which celebrates its 150th anniversary next year, nearly three years ago after a varied career in greenkeeping that began when he left school.

The opportunity to take on the course manager role at Airdrie was one he couldn’t ignore.

“I could see the opportunity to implement my own ideas and take things to the next level,” he says. “Everything we said from day one that we were going to do, we’ve managed to achieve so far. It’s not just the greens; we’ve improved all aspects of the course.”

One of Jordan’s key objectives from the outset was to reduce disease pressure through solid agronomic fundamentals.

“The main goal when I came in was to go as disease-free as we possibly could,” he explains. “We achieved that in the first year. It’s really just about going back to basics – keeping the plant dry, keeping the surface open, and doing the simple things well.”

With a team of four maintaining the parkland course, those fundamentals include regular aeration at varying depths, scarifying, slitting, and winter use of a sarel roller to keep surfaces open and healthy.

“I always say there isn’t just one thing that makes the difference,” Jordan adds. “It’s everything working together.”

Alongside those mechanical practices, Attraxor has become a central part of the greens management programme. Originally introduced to help reduce Poa annua seedheads, the plant growth regulator quickly proved its value across the growing season.

“In my other roles I have used it briefly, but I really started using it properly here,” says Jordan. “It was mainly the Poa seedheads that we were targeting. I trialled it and it worked wonders.”

“We took a bit of a risk the first year trying it through the winter, but we noticed the ball roll was so much smoother,” he explains. “Coming into the season the surfaces were already in a much better position.”

At Rye Lawn Tennis Club in East Sussex, Head Groundsman Adam Stunt has spent the past 16 years ensuring the club’s eight grass courts remain among the finest in the region and MM50 grass seed plays a key role in that success.

Founded in 1922, Rye Lawn Tennis Club boasts a diverse range of facilities, including eight grass courts, three artificial clay courts, two padel courts, squash courts, a croquet lawn and a gym. However, it is the club’s renowned grass courts that continue to attract praise from players and visitors alike.

According to Adam, the transformation in the quality of the playing surfaces began around 15 years ago when the courts were laser levelled and a greater emphasis was placed on court preparation and maintenance.

“The club has always hosted a major open tournament at the end of the summer,” he said. “Years ago, some of the feedback from players wasn’t particularly great because they were playing at clubs with higher-quality surfaces. Since the courts were laser levelled and more focus was put on maintenance, that has completely changed. Most people who play here now feel the standard of the grass courts is right up there.”

Central to that maintenance programme is MM50, a specialist perennial ryegrass mixture.

“It’s what we’ve used for the entire time I’ve been here,” said Adam. “It’s something that we massively respect and rely on because of the quality of the seed and the results that we get year after year.”

Depending on conditions and requirements, this may involve fraise mowing or more intensive Koro renovation work to remove accumulated thatch and organic matter before reseeding.

Adam’s maintenance programme continues throughout the winter with regular mowing and nutrition applications to maintain plant health. As spring arrives, Adam carries out a further overseeding programme using MM50 to ensure maximum density heading into the playing season.

“When weather allows, usually around the middle of April, we’ll overseed again at a lighter rate, apply a light top dressing and some fertiliser, and then let it come through before the season starts.”

The demands placed on the courts are significant. During the club’s annual open tournament and associated tennis festival, all eight courts can be in constant use from morning until evening for several consecutive weeks.

“During our busiest period, all eight courts can be in play from 9.30 in the morning until 8 o’clock at night,” said Adam. “That’s during our three-day open tournament, but it’s followed by junior events and club tournaments, so for two or three weeks they are absolutely hammered. By the end of it, they definitely look like they need a rest.”

Despite the intense wear, MM50 continues to deliver the durability and recovery required to maintain playing standards.

The club purchases its seed through Fine Turf and, given his experience with the product, Adam has no hesitation in recommending it to other tennis clubs.

“I would definitely recommend MM50 to anyone involved in tennis. For us, the system isn’t broken, so we’re not trying to fix it. The perennial ryegrass works perfectly because of its hardiness, wear tolerance and ability to cope with close mowing. We wouldn’t use anything else.”

Under the guidance of Head of Playing Surfaces and Landscaping Nick Phillips, the club has developed a detailed, holistic approach focused on soil health, plant resilience and long-term performance; supported by products from Agrovista Amenity.

Having started at the club in 2004 as a 16-year-old apprentice, Nick has witnessed Tottenham Hotspur evolve from the old training ground at Chigwell into one of the world’s leading football facilities.

“The business has just grown massively,” said Nick. “When we moved from Chigwell to the new training centre, it almost felt like starting a new job for the same company. There has always been a drive to improve and develop every part of the site.”

That growth is reflected in the scale of the operation Nick now oversees. Across the stadium and training centre, he manages a department of 43 staff covering grounds, landscaping, irrigation, mechanics and horticulture.

Central to maintaining elite-level surfaces is the club’s renovation programme; something Nick believes is non-negotiable.

“Carrying out renovations every year is crucial,” he said. “Renovations are directly linked to surface performance, traction, firmness and the longevity of the pitch.”

Tottenham Hotspur took the decision around 15 years ago to bring renovations fully in-house, a move Nick believes has transformed the club’s flexibility and ownership of its surfaces.

“It gives you far greater control,” he explained. “You’re not dictated to by somebody else’s schedule. If weather conditions allow and you want to move quickly, you can. It also gives the team more ownership because you’re responsible for the whole process from start to finish.”

The renovation process itself is meticulous. After reducing mowing heights, the team removes the vegetation before repeated raking and cleaning operations expose the reinforcement fibres and remove accumulated organic matter.

Once the surface is cleaned, sand topdressing is applied at rates between 90 and 110 tonnes depending on the age and performance of the pitch, followed by aeration to connect the upper and lower profile. From there, the nutritional programme begins.

One of the key shifts Nick has implemented in recent years has been reducing reliance on fungicides and excessive nitrogen applications by focusing more heavily on soil biology and plant resilience.

“The industry is going that way,” he said. “Years ago, we probably all focused too much on the top growth. If the grass looked green, you thought it was healthy. But actually, if you create a healthy soil profile and healthy soil life, you reap the rewards in the plant itself.”

Working closely with Agrovista Amenity, Nick introduced a more balanced nutritional strategy built around supporting both the plant and the soil ecosystem.

“We shared the same vision,” he said. “It was about supporting soil health while still maintaining the plant quality and performance levels we expect.”

A major component of that programme is Agrovista Amenity’s Evolution Naturelle granular fertiliser range, used during the pre-seeding stage of renovations.

“We used to rely more on straight mineral fertilisers,” explained Nick. “Now we’ve adapted towards more of an organo-mineral approach. Evolution gives us nutrition for the plant, but it also supports soil biology through carbon and organic matter.”

Nick applies two forms of pre-seed fertiliser, one with a heavier organic focus to support microbial activity, followed by another with a stronger mineral element timed to coincide with germination.

“We want that fertiliser sitting exactly where it needs to be when the seed germinates,” he said. “We use a dimple seeder after application because it creates a micro-aeration effect and just works the fertiliser into that upper profile where the response is all connected.”

The result is stronger early rooting and more efficient establishment.

Once germination begins, the programme moves into liquid applications, with Agrovista Amenity’s exclusive L-CBF Turfgrass Enhancer playing a significant role.

“There’s a very small window after germination where you can really influence the plant,” said Nick. “L-CBF is high in carbohydrates, amino acids sugars and molasses, and it really stimulates early plant energy and growth.”

Applied before the first cut, L-CBF is designed to accelerate establishment during the critical early stages of development.

Alongside L-CBF, Nick also incorporates MicroGrow into the programme to enhance soil biology and rooting. MicroGrow is a specialised formulation with a blend of seaweed extracts and other naturally-derived compounds of marine and terrestrial origin. It is tailor made for root drench application to increase biological activity in sports turf soils.

“That’s one of the key products for us,” he explained. “MicroGrow goes in at those very early stages of germination when we can really influence soil biology and root development.”

The benefits are visible in the rooting performance across the surfaces.

“When we carry out root depth checks, you can clearly see the products working,” he said. “You get strong anchorage and early root mass, which is absolutely critical because pre-season is incredibly demanding on the pitches.”

With first team players often training twice daily during pre-season, rapid recovery and stability are essential.

“You might only have two pitches available initially, so those surfaces take a huge amount of stress,” Nick continued. “The deeper the roots, the more nutrition and water the plant can access, and the better the recovery and wear tolerance become.”

Nick believes the move towards more sustainable, biology-focused management is only going to accelerate throughout the industry.

“You’re never going to get those old chemicals back,” he said. “You either fight it or embrace it. We chose to get in front of it and start finding what works for us now.”

For Tottenham Hotspur, that means continuing to refine a holistic approach built around healthy soils, resilient plants and carefully targeted inputs.

“This isn’t about simply greening up pitches,” said Nick. “It’s about creating the best possible surfaces through every detail of the programme. That’s something we pride ourselves on every single day.”

The traditional links course faces relentless wind, sand splash, naturally free-draining conditions and increasing pressure from dry summers – making drought tolerance a critical consideration when it comes to the clubs choice of grass seed.

“We’ve done two sowings of the J Sustain Fairway since I arrived and the whole team have noted that the seed germinated well, comes through a lot healthier than other mixtures and copes with the dry conditions very well.” Gareth continues, “It was a particularly dry summer last year so it really put the seed to the test but our fairways more than survived, they thrived!”

Johnsons seed is also delivering equally impressive results in other areas of the course. “We use a bent/fescue blend on our greens which gives us the colour we need and the robustness to cope with an average of 200 rounds per day.”
