<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When Chris Roberts became Course Manager at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club, it quickly became apparent that the club&#8217;s ageing irrigation system was becoming one of the biggest obstacles to maintaining consistently high playing surfaces.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Originally founded in 1889, the renowned heathland course sits within Sutton Park and operates under the careful oversight of both Historic England and Natural England. While its unique location makes it one of the country&#8217;s most picturesque golf courses, it also presents significant challenges when undertaking any infrastructure work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For Chris, the club&#8217;s 1991 irrigation system had simply reached the end of its useful life.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;We were constantly dealing with leaks,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;The pipework was old and the sprinkler coverage, particularly on the tees, was really poor. It was becoming a horrible cycle of losing grass, overseeding, getting it back for winter and then losing it again during the next drought.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Seeking a long-term solution, Chris began working with <a href="http://www.karuk.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KAR UK</a>’s Manager of International Golf Sales Wes Henshaw, whose advice initially centred around improving irrigation performance on one particularly problematic putting green.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;We carried out catch cup testing and realised the sprinklers simply weren&#8217;t providing head-to-head coverage,&#8221; Chris said. &#8220;After changing the layout and increasing distribution uniformity, we virtually eliminated the hand watering that had become part of our daily routine.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That early success gave Chris confidence in both Hunter&#8217;s products and KAR UK&#8217;s technical expertise.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When the time came to modernise the course&#8217;s irrigation infrastructure, the decision to adopt the Hunter Pilot System was straightforward.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unlike many projects of this scale, Chris elected to undertake the installation entirely in-house.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The decision wasn&#8217;t driven purely by cost. Because the golf course sits within a Scheduled Ancient Monument, every trench had to follow the original pipe routes to avoid disturbing Roman roads, 16th-century boundary ditches and other archaeological features. Historic England closely supervised the works, meaning careful excavation was essential throughout the project.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over several years the team installed close to 180 Hunter sprinkler heads across greens, approaches and tees, replacing outdated UPVC pipework with modern polyethylene mains.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">KAR UK&#8217;s support extended well beyond supplying equipment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t just a case of selling us the hardware. Wes made sure we were installing everything correctly and provided quality control throughout the project.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The results have transformed daily course management. Where staff once monitored sprinklers throughout the night, the Hunter Pilot System now allows complete confidence in fully automated overnight irrigation programmes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;We can put it on at ten o&#8217;clock at night and know it&#8217;ll still be running perfectly at five in the morning.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Control via the Hunter Pilot mobile app has also provided flexibility.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;If rain suddenly appears that wasn&#8217;t forecast, I can switch the system off from my phone. We&#8217;ve also got a full course map so we can target individual sprinklers if one area needs more water.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The club has further enhanced precision by integrating POGO moisture meters with the Hunter Pilot system. Moisture readings are analysed using AI, enabling Chris to fine-tune nozzle selection, irrigation run times and water distribution with increasing accuracy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;It&#8217;s helping us refine everything. We can see exactly where adjustments need to be made.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perhaps the greatest benefit has been the amount of labour saved.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Previously, significant staff time was devoted to hand watering, monitoring sprinklers and constantly reacting to irrigation shortcomings. Those hours can now be spent improving other areas of the golf course.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;It&#8217;s freed us up. Man hours used to get lost dealing with irrigation. Now we&#8217;re able to focus on fine-tuning greens and improving other aspects of the course.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For Chris, the reduction in pressure has been every bit as valuable as the improved turf quality.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I think it&#8217;s taken a huge amount of stress away. As course managers we always want to produce the best possible surfaces, but when you&#8217;ve got the right systems in place, everything becomes easier.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reflecting on the completed project, Chris believes the combination of Hunter&#8217;s technology and KAR UK&#8217;s technical support has fundamentally changed how the course is managed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;People forget how dated old irrigation systems become until they install a new one.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Afterwards you find yourself wondering how you ever coped before. The accuracy, the reliability and especially being able to service everything from above ground has been a real game changer for us.&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">St Enodoc Golf Club has committed to Toro in a significant, multi-year investment that includes a tailored fleet of machinery and an upgrade to its irrigation infrastructure and technology.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The investment represents the club’s first major fleet renewal in a decade and was developed over a three-year period with DGM LTD and Reesink Turfcare.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It reflects a carefully planned transition designed to align with the club’s evolving agronomic and operational requirements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The package features battery-powered greens mowers, pedestrian cutting equipment and an evolving upgrade of the irrigation system supported by <a href="https://www.reesinkturfcare.co.uk/newslines/summer-2024/discover-lynx/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Toro Lynx Central Control software.</a></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For Head Greenkeeper William Smith, the decision reflects both the changing demands placed on modern golf courses and the opportunities offered by advances in technology.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“A lot has changed over the past decade,” he says. “Expectations around course presentation have continued to rise, while sustainability and efficiency have become much bigger priorities. This investment allows us to modernise our fleet and give the team the tools they need to maintain the course to the highest possible standard.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among the standout additions to support the club’s wider sustainability ambitions, which are guided by its GEO certification, are four battery-powered Toro Greensmaster eTriFlex 3370 and hybrid 3360 greens mowers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The addition of six Toro Flex 1021 hand mowers has further enhanced presentation standards on greens and tees, while the expanded overall fleet provides greater operational flexibility by allowing multiple maintenance tasks to be completed simultaneously, reducing downtime and improving productivity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alongside the machinery investment, St Enodoc is taking a phased approach to upgrading its irrigation system. New Toro sprinklers are being installed across tees and walkways, complemented by the introduction of Toro Lynx Central Control software, giving the greenkeeping team greater precision over irrigation scheduling and water application.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Water is one of our most valuable resources, so using it efficiently is essential,” says William. “Toro Lynx gives us much greater control over when, where and how much water we apply, helping us reduce waste while maintaining turf health in what’s fast becoming an unpredictable climate.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Working closely with Reesink Turfcare and local dealer DGM proved instrumental in developing a machinery package tailored to the club’s specific requirements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Rather than offering a standard package, they took the time to understand our course and our long-term objectives,” says William. “It’s been a genuine partnership from start to finish. Our aim is to deliver outstanding course conditions while operating more efficiently and responsibly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This investment provides the foundation to achieve that for many years to come.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rob Read at DGM says: “St Enodoc has taken a considered, long-term approach to investing in both machinery and irrigation, recognising how the two work together to deliver consistently high course standards.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The National Drought Group has heard that while water resources remain in a relatively healthy position following an exceptionally wet winter, some areas are already seeing the impacts of drier conditions. Water management has arguably never been so important.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is now 50 years since the infamous drought of 1976, but 2026 promises to be one of the most challenging years on record for the professional groundscare industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The parched conditions of Spring increased the risk of drought this summer, but then the UK basked in one of the most prolonged periods of heatwave for many years. The extreme temperatures, allied to the lack of rainfall, have created a whole new set of issues for the industry to tackle.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">National Drought Group chair and Director of Water at the Environment Agency, Helen Wakeham, said the country had entered the summer in a generally favourable position, but any complacency quickly dissipated as the summer progressed</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Heatwaves will continue to be a concern as they can drive spikes in water demand, so we need to continue to work collaboratively to use our finite water wisely,” she explained.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“While many of us enjoy the hot weather, we ask everyone to be mindful of their water use.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Silvermere Golf Course, irrigation plays a critical role in maintaining the high standards expected of its 18-hole championship parkland course. Under the guidance of Course Manager Tim Muir, the Surrey venue has undertaken a major in-house irrigation upgrade project using a range of Hunter irrigation products supplied by <strong>KAR UK</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tim, who has been Course Manager at Silvermere for nine years, explained that the project was born out of the need to replace an ageing PVC irrigation system which had become increasingly unreliable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Probably four or five years ago we were running on an old PVC system, and we had endless problems with it, so we made the decision to upgrade,” he said. “We started a three-year project of an in-house irrigation install, which originally covered greens, tees and approaches.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the early stages of the project, Tim was introduced to KAR UK’s Carl Sharp &#8211; Golf Sales Manager UK &amp; Ireland, who recommended a range of Hunter products including G-85, I-25 and I-20 rotors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following the success of the initial installation, Silvermere expanded the project further by introducing fairway irrigation across the entire course using Hunter’s G-85 golf rotors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The last year just gone, we decided to add fairway irrigation to the full course, which we then went with the Hunter G-85 heads,” said Tim. “They’ve been great. We’ve just finished the install now and have been running them over the last few weeks with great results, so we’re really pleased with them.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Hunter G-85 rotor is designed specifically for golf applications and is renowned for its durability, torque output and efficient water distribution. Its patented gear-drive system and self-cleaning design have proven particularly valuable at Silvermere.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I really like the self-cleaning system and the way the heads run,” Tim explained. “We’ve had no problems with anything getting stuck or gears getting blocked up with sand. The throw on them is great and the nozzle ranges are amazing.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The flexibility of the nozzle selection has enabled the Silvermere team to tailor irrigation precisely to different areas of the course.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Some fairways tighten up in places, so we’ve adjusted certain nozzles so we’re not over spraying,” said Tim. “We’ve gone with a twin-row 180 design on the fairways, so we’re not losing loads of water into the roughs. The nozzles have allowed us to minimise the water we’re wasting and use it where we want it.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Efficient water use was a major consideration throughout the project, particularly as the club relies heavily on mains water.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We haven’t got endless amounts of water here,” Tim said. “We really needed to use it only where it’s needed.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the tees, Silvermere installed a combination of Hunter I-25 and I-20 rotors, allowing the team to match sprinkler performance to different tee sizes and layouts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We’ve got the I-25s on tees and I-20s on the smaller tees,” said Tim. “They’re running really well too. It’s allowed us to just water the tees and not waste any water again.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tim believes the improvements in irrigation performance have already had a noticeable impact on course conditioning. Another key factor for Silvermere has been the long-term reliability of the Hunter products.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Fairway drought performance</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Independent research carried out at the NIBIO Turfgrass Research Center in Norway has highlighted <strong>ICL</strong>’s H2Pro TriSmart and Syngenta’s Qualibra among seven commercially available soil surfactant technologies evaluated under prolonged drought conditions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The work forms part of the STERF-funded FAIR WATER II project, supported by The R&amp;A Golf Course 2030 initiative and the German Greenkeepers Association (GVD), investigating practical drought management and water-use strategies for golf course fairways across Northern Europe.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the severe 2024 drought period, untreated plots required 116 mm of irrigation water to maintain the intervention threshold, compared with 90 mm for plots treated with H2Pro TriSmart. This represented a statistically significant 22% reduction in irrigation water use versus untreated turf.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alongside lower water use, H2Pro TriSmart maintained strong turf quality, green grass cover, and soil moisture performance throughout the drought period, with the trial paper describing it as delivering the “best all-round performance” under the conditions tested.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Within the same controlled rainout shelter trials at the NIBIO Turfgrass Research Center Landvik in Norway, Syngenta’s Qualibra was recognised for providing the “best overall visual appearance after prolonged drought”.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As golf courses continue to face increasing pressure around water availability, irrigation costs, and prolonged dry periods, the FAIR WATER II project is also assessing approaches including thatch management, deep aeration, and the use of brackish or recycled irrigation water.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dr Andy Owen, International Technical Manager for ICL, said: “Independent trial work like FAIR WATER II provides valuable practical insight into how different technologies perform under prolonged drought stress. It is encouraging to see H2Pro TriSmart recognised for reducing irrigation water requirement while maintaining turf performance, alongside the visual turf quality delivered through Qualibra.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Terrain Aeration’s Terralift system celebrates 50 years of successful <a href="http://www.terrainaeration.co.uk/">deep aeration</a> treatment of bowling greens, sports turf, golf clubs, parks, trees and more.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the end of September, when bowling clubs are thinking about carrying out end of season maintenance, aeration is a concept that is thought about&nbsp;but&nbsp;rarely addressed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Scarifying, re-seeding, and top dressing are on the front line of the main budget planning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Forgotten are the days when games had to stop play because the ground was waterlogged. A nuisance at the time, but now is the time to bring this problem up at a committee meeting and address it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Terrain Aeration Scamper Terralift machine was designed 20 years ago to be able to access most bowling greens.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Scamper Terralift machine hammers a hollow probe (1 1/2&#8243; ( 37mm width) one metre into the soil before releasing&nbsp;a controlled blast of compressed air, to a maximum of 20Bar/280 psi. This pressure is monitored or changed by the operator, so there is a slight movement of the top surface before the turf settles back down. Then, the operator knows that he has aerated the ground from one metre to the top surface.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the tail end of the release of compressed air, dried seaweed is incorporated which sticks to the walls of the fractures and fissures created by the main air blast.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over a period, the seaweed expands and contracts with the moisture content of the&nbsp;soil, swelling and contracting &#8211; similar to breathing underground, helping to keep the fissures open longer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The machine uses 2m centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern, each shot interconnecting with the previous ones, ensuring the whole area is aerated and decompacted. The probe holes are backfilled with an aggregate, with the top 1&#8243;-2&#8243; backfilled with&nbsp;normal&nbsp;top dressing material. Once this deep aeration&nbsp;treatment has taken place, it would not be required for at least another 10-12 years, so it is extremely cost-effective.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Deep aeration treatment of a green takes around 5 to 6 hours. The engine/compressor unit is kept off the green with an umbilical air hose to supply&nbsp;the compressed air, thus reducing weight on the green as well as having to start and stop the machine every two metres.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is preferable that the greenkeeper slits&nbsp;or hollow tines before the Terrain Aeration treatment, to relieve the surface tension so the air can gently blow through those top holes. The treatment can take place before top dressing and re-seed. but if ground conditions at that time deem the green too wet, then the end of season maintenance can continue and later, the Scamper Terralift can come in and aerate the green. There is enough time to fit this in before March of the following year.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Terrain Aeration has at times even treated a bowling green mid-season &#8211; one had a black squidge where the bowler&#8217;s back foot was placed. If the treatment hadn&#8217;t taken place, that green would have played itself out until the end of the season. It would not have been repaired/replaced. That green survived and is going strong many years later. One club commented that after Terrain aerated their green on one of their matches, rain stopped play. They found that they could only have one pint from the bar before the green had drained away of water and play could continue.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A final point. Clubs considering laying in drains will have disruption to their green, but still have compaction&nbsp;panning in between the drain runs. With a track record of treating greens for over thirty years, it&#8217;s certainly worth Terrain Aeration taking a look before committing to the expense of laying drains.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For Head Greenkeeper Stephen Leighton, the installation of a new Rain Bird irrigation system provided by <a href="https://originamenity.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Origin Amenity Solutions</a> (OAS) has been transformative.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Part of a course-wide redevelopment programme, the system is delivering unprecedented control over applications resulting in significant reductions in overall water usage and improvements in plant health.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The heathland-parkland course sits on a free-draining sandy soil, presenting challenges for Stephen and the team of five when it comes to maintaining turf quality through increasingly unpredictable weather conditions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This made the replacement of an aging and progressively unreliable irrigation system a priority. “I was racking up the hours monitoring the system in the evenings and found myself constantly battling breakdowns” he explains.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We evaluated the options and opted for a new Rain Bird system based on the reliability and flexibility it offered and the fantastic support and advice of Origin’s Greg Milton, Peter Robin and Angus Finlayson.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stephen continues, “One of the most significant differences and improvements has been the move from an outdated block system on the greens and single-row fairways, to valve in head Rain Bird 752IC and a double row of 952IC on fairways. This enables us to be much more precise with every application, adapting to wind strength and direction and limiting the amount of water thrown into heather and long roughs.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“In numbers, this system and more efficient control has resulted in around a 50% reduction in our water usage. This is incredibly important for us not just from a sustainability standpoint but also in terms of plant health and the condition of our heather which is improving now that we can control the water more effectively and ensure it is not being overwatered.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Making life even easier for Stephen and the team is the Rain Bird CirrusPro app, putting total control of the irrigation system in the palm of their hands. “OAS were selling this as the best software in the irrigation market and, having worked with it, I’d say that’s absolutely true! It makes monitoring so much quicker and easier, with any identified dry areas overcome with the touch of a button.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beyond the technology itself, Stephen credits the OAS team for making sure the project ran smoothly from concept to completion and beyond. “While I designed the system myself, Greg, Peter and Angus have all been fantastic at helping us to get the maximum out of the system.” He adds, “I must also give huge credit to my team here at Holme Hall for getting the system installed. It’s been a massive team effort and it’s great to already be reaping the rewards of all the hard work.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Silvermere Golf Course, irrigation plays a critical role in maintaining the high standards expected of its 18-hole championship parkland course.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under the guidance of Course Manager Tim Muir, the Surrey venue has undertaken a major in-house irrigation upgrade project using a range of Hunter irrigation products supplied by <a href="http://www.karuk.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KAR UK</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tim, who has been Course Manager at Silvermere for nine years, explained that the project was born out of the need to replace an ageing PVC irrigation system which had become increasingly unreliable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Probably four or five years ago we were running on an old PVC system, and we had endless problems with it, so we made the decision to upgrade,” he said. “We started a three-year project of an in-house irrigation install, which originally covered greens, tees and approaches.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the early stages of the project, Tim was introduced to KAR UK’s Carl Sharp &#8211; Golf Sales Manager UK &amp; Ireland, who recommended a range of Hunter products including G-85, I-25 and I-20 rotors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following the success of the initial installation, Silvermere expanded the project further by introducing fairway irrigation across the entire course using Hunter’s G-85 golf rotors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The last year just gone, we decided to add fairway irrigation to the full course, which we then went with the Hunter G-85 heads,” said Tim. “They’ve been great. We’ve just finished the install now and have been running them over the last few weeks with great results, so we’re really pleased with them.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Hunter G-85 rotor is designed specifically for golf applications and is renowned for its durability, torque output and efficient water distribution. Its patented gear-drive system and self-cleaning design have proven particularly valuable at Silvermere.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I really like the self-cleaning system and the way the heads run,” Tim explained. “We’ve had no problems with anything getting stuck or gears getting blocked up with sand. The throw on them is great and the nozzle ranges are amazing.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The flexibility of the nozzle selection has enabled the Silvermere team to tailor irrigation precisely to different areas of the course.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Some fairways tighten up in places, so we’ve adjusted certain nozzles so we’re not over spraying,” said Tim. “We’ve gone with a twin-row 180 design on the fairways, so we’re not losing loads of water into the roughs. The nozzles have allowed us to minimise the water we’re wasting and use it where we want it.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Efficient water use was a major consideration throughout the project, particularly as the club relies heavily on mains water.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We haven’t got endless amounts of water here,” Tim said. “We really needed to use it only where it’s needed.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the tees, Silvermere installed a combination of Hunter I-25 and I-20 rotors, allowing the team to match sprinkler performance to different tee sizes and layouts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We’ve got the I-25s on tees and I-20s on the smaller tees,” said Tim. “They’re running really well too. It’s allowed us to just water the tees and not waste any water again.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Hunter I-25 rotor is widely regarded for its durability and versatility, offering a large nozzle selection and built-in check valve to improve water efficiency. Meanwhile, the I-20 provides flexibility for smaller areas thanks to its broad nozzle options, vandal-proof drive mechanism and precise arc adjustment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tim believes the improvements in irrigation performance have already had a noticeable impact on course conditioning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Historically, the old heads gave uneven coverage, and we’d be out hand watering loads on corners of greens,” he said. “You wouldn’t know if it was the make-up of the greens or a problem with the irrigation, but since putting in the G-85 heads there is so much more even coverage. We still hand water in places, but it’s more shady patches now.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another key factor for Silvermere has been the long-term reliability of the Hunter products.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Some of them have been in the ground three years now and we haven’t needed to touch them since we set the arc and put the nozzle in on the day they were installed,” Tim said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tim also praised the support and service provided throughout the project by KAR UK.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“KAR are great,” he said. “The service is good, Carl’s always been there and the supply was excellent. Everything ran smoothly, so we’d definitely recommend them.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking ahead, Tim is confident that the partnership with KAR UK and Hunter irrigation products will continue long into the future.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It has been very productive working together,” he said. “I’m sure we’ll cross paths a lot in the future and carry on working together.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Independent research carried out at the NIBIO Turfgrass Research Center in Norway has highlighted ICL’s <a href="http://www.icl-growingsolutions.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">H2Pro TriSmart</a> and Syngenta’s Qualibra among seven commercially available soil surfactant technologies evaluated under prolonged drought conditions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The work forms part of the STERF-funded FAIR WATER II project, supported by The R&amp;A Golf Course 2030 initiative and the German Greenkeepers Association (GVD), investigating practical drought management and water-use strategies for golf course fairways across Northern Europe.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the severe 2024 drought period, untreated plots required 116 mm of irrigation water to maintain the intervention threshold, compared with 90 mm for plots treated with H2Pro TriSmart. This represented a statistically significant 22% reduction in irrigation water use versus untreated turf.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alongside lower water use, H2Pro TriSmart maintained strong turf quality, green grass cover, and soil moisture performance throughout the drought period, with the trial paper describing it as delivering the “best all-round performance” under the conditions tested.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Within the same controlled rainout shelter trials at the NIBIO Turfgrass Research Center Landvik in Norway, Syngenta’s Qualibra was recognised for providing the “best overall visual appearance after prolonged drought”.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As golf courses continue to face increasing pressure around water availability, irrigation costs, and prolonged dry periods, the FAIR WATER II project is also assessing approaches including thatch management, deep aeration, and the use of brackish or recycled irrigation water.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dr Andy Owen, International Technical Manager for ICL, said: “Independent trial work like FAIR WATER II provides valuable practical insight into how different technologies perform under prolonged drought stress. It is encouraging to see H2Pro TriSmart recognised for reducing irrigation water requirement while maintaining turf performance, alongside the visual turf quality delivered through Qualibra.”</p>
